Smooth Move: 4 Tips For An Easy Move Out Of State
Long distance moving is a huge change. If you've never moved out of state, you are probably way out of your element. It's hard to know what you should do and what would be a huge mistake. Here are some tips for making your interstate move a smooth one.
1. Purge Your Home
When you move out of the state, you don't always think about the things you won't need. If you're moving from a cooler climate to a warmer one, you could end up wasting a lot of time and effort packing up winter clothes into boxes. The same goes if you're moving from a warmer to a cooler climate. When it's only hot 3 months out of the year, you don't need an entire wardrobe full of summer clothing. You only need to pick some of your favorites and donate the rest.
Clothes aren't the only issue. Even if your new home has the same square footage as your current home, that doesn't mean it has the same amount of space for your furniture. The location of doors, closets, and interior walls could cause you to need different furniture. Unless you know for sure it's going to fit, you might be better off selling large sectionals and huge entertainment centers. Basically, move with the bare minimum.
As for other items, try using the one year rule. If you haven't used the item in a year and it doesn't spark an instant feeling in your heart, it's time to let it go. When you move close by, it's not as crucial, but you don't want to waste your time and money moving unneeded items so far away.
2. Use a Moving Company
Moving out of state is a lot of work. Trying to pack up your entire home, loading it into a truck, and driving it to your new house is way too much work for a person. Especially if you have a family and children that you are trying to take care of. Hiring a moving company will turn your move from a nightmare to an accomplishment. They will come pack all of your stuff up, load it into the truck, and even drive it to your new home. Once the truck arrives, they'll unload all of your stuff and put everything where it belong. You and your family can get on a plane and not deal with any of the hassles of moving.
3. Make Travel Packs
Have a backpack for every member of the family. In the backpack, you'll want an outfit, a pair of pajamas, socks, their toothbrush, toothpaste and other essentials. You don't want to arrive at your new home and start digging through boxes while you're tired and the kids are cranky. Make sure you also have a roll of toilet paper, some paper plates, and plastic utensils handy.
4. Protect Irreplaceable Items
If you're driving to your new home with your family, make sure you pack your irreplaceable items in the car. If you're taking a plane, try to put what you can in your carry-on. If a box of dishes disappears, it's no big deal; but if your box of photo albums disappears, that's not something you can buy. Many people don't think about this and will put their photo albums and family keepsakes in a box. When you're moving to the next town, that's not a big deal because it's difficult to lose track of items so quickly; but when a truck is driving out of state with all your items, don't take any chances.
Moving is stressful, but you can take a lot of the stress off by avoiding some huge mistakes. Don't move yourself and don't show up at your new home without travel packs. These tips will allow the move to go much more smoothly. For more tips and ideas, contact interstate movers in your area.
